SUKUMA Sukuma vocal collective (sukuma meaning “stand up”/“push” in Zulu/Swahili) is composed of vocalists whose intent is to foster excellence within African vocal music traditions. Led by African-American choral conductor and composer Trina Coleman, the ensemble’s guiding vocal technique produces a healthy, powerful sound which renders electronic amplification unnecessary. As per African tradition, the ensemble incorporates audience participation with music and movement as a central source of healing and unification.
