Gospel choir course / Rhythmic

What forms the chorus tones from a rhythmic perspective. It rehearse a repertoire of musical pitch from black gospel to more pop-oriented ballads in which great emphasis is placed on phrasing, dynamics, rhythmic and "groove". This course provides an introduction to a "gospel sound" is created and introduced exercises and techniques to achieve this.

This course will suit those who want to become better acquainted with the genre of gospel music, and through the course to learn techniques that characterize this genre. Martin has picked up a bunch of exciting and sonorous gospel songs that will be used on the course.

Instructor: Martin Alfsen


Martin Alfsen, b. 04.01.1959 is a composer, lyricist, musician and conductor of Oslo.

Martin Alfsen is one of the most prolific and experienced rhythmic choir conductors. He has served as arranger and producer for more than 50 albums with the choir in a variety of rhythmic genres - and his over 300 compositions for choir are much listed and recorded both in and outside Norway.

As a choral conductor he has worked with a wide range of Norwegian and international artists on the album recordings, TV-/radioopptak and concerts, Secret Garden, Andrae Crouch, Richard Smallwood, Englebert Humperdinck, Kurt Carr, Gaute Ormåsen, Trine Rein, Inger Lise Rypdal, Hanne Krogh and Kjell Karlsen's just a few of these.

With the choir Reflex which he has led since the early 80's, he has toured throughout Europe and sold more than 200,000 albums. He is a sought after seminar holder and guest conductor and led the spring of 2011 the great gospel choir workshop at Hannover Jazz Festival and directed that a choir performance for more than 30,000 spectators at the festival's Closing.

As a writer he stands among other things, behind the rhythmic choir method "Jazz-Gospel-Soul-Pop KOR" (Norsk Musikkforlag, 2007) and "Songwriter Handbook" (Norsk Musikkforlag, 2010).

The repertoire of this course is arranged folktones and classic gems.

Based on these songs will be exciting to see how far we come with the awareness of sound placement and intonation, phrasing and dynamics. The goal is the process, it is important to have fun along the way. Then the results!

Tove Ramlo-Ystad

benefits her time between being a music professional consultant in the Norwegian Choir Association, with being a choir conductor. Helping the new conductors and provide inspiration to the existing conductors is a priority for Tove.

She is a singing teacher from Trøndelag Music Conservatory and has studied choir direction with Stefan Sköld. Important sources for the development of conducting the subject has since been Anders Eby, professor of choir at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, and Mogens Dahl in Copenhagen. Tove also music majors from NTNU.

There are now about 25 years ago, Tove was one of the established women's choir Cantus and project choir Trønderkor. For Trønderkor Tove was artistic director for 10 years, while she still has the same role in the Cantus.

Together with Cantus Tove has received "Trondheim Kommunes Kulturpris" and "Sør-Trøndelag Fylkeskommunes Kulturpris", and she has been awarded the conductor prices in connection with the choir competitions in Riva del Garda and Budapest.

Tove is used regularly as a judge in national and international choir competitions.
